When might you need a dental crown?

A dental crown, also called a cap, is a custom-made covering that fits over a tooth to restore its shape and support it. Your dentist may recommend a crown for a cracked or broken tooth, a large filling with too little tooth remaining, or a weakened tooth at risk of further damage.

An examination helps determine whether the remaining natural tooth structure can support a crown or another restoration. A crown can also cover a root canal-treated tooth or form the visible tooth on a dental implant. A crown alone does not replace the root of a missing tooth.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR RESTORATION

How a crown can restore a damaged tooth

See the difference between a damaged tooth and an illustration of a tooth covered by a crown. Your dentist will explain what treatment could achieve for your tooth.

YOUR TREATMENT, STEP BY STEP

The dental crown process

Traditional crowns generally involve two appointments: tooth preparation, followed by a second appointment for the permanent crown. This is a general outline; confirm your own schedule with the treating dentist.

Smiles Today Dental uses local anesthesia during treatment. Tell your dentist if you feel pain during the crown procedure. Some sensitivity can follow crown placement; contact the office if discomfort persists or your bite feels uneven.

01

First visit: assessment and planning

Use your initial consultation for a treatment plan discussion: explain when the tooth bothers you, any previous dental work and your goals. Ask which treatment options fit your needs, why a crown is recommended and what your written estimate covers. Bring your medication list and dental insurance information.

02

Preparation and impressions

The dentist prepares the tooth and takes impressions for the crown’s custom fit. A temporary crown protects the prepared tooth while the permanent crown is made. Ask how to clean around it and which hard or sticky foods to avoid.

03

Second visit: crown placement

The temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown’s fit, appearance and bite are checked before it is secured. Tell your dentist if the bite feels uneven. Confirm when to resume normal eating and any follow-up you need.

Compare dental crown materials

Crown materials differ in appearance and strength. The following describes general treatment options; your dentist will explain which are available and appropriate for your tooth.

A closer look at how a crown covers a prepared tooth.

Porcelain and other ceramic crowns

Tooth-colored materials can give a crown a natural appearance. For front teeth, discuss shade and translucency as well as durability. All-porcelain crowns and other ceramics have different properties; your dentist can explain the recommended option.

Zirconia crowns

Zirconia is a strong ceramic material. The right choice still depends on your bite, the tooth being restored and appearance goals—not strength alone.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns

These combine a metal base with a porcelain exterior. Ask about the balance of appearance, durability and any metal sensitivities when comparing this option.

Metal crowns

Metal alloys, including gold alloys, offer durability but do not resemble natural teeth. Visibility when you smile is one consideration in choosing a material.

No single material is right for every tooth. Discuss your bite, cosmetic goals and any material sensitivities. Confirm the recommended material in your estimate, including whether it qualifies for the starting offer.

PLAN WITH CONFIDENCE

Dental insurance and crown costs

We accept PPO dental insurance and self-pay patients. Please confirm your specific plan with the office. Plan acceptance does not establish that a procedure is covered or that the practice is in-network with your plan.

Our dental crowns start at $600; your treatment plan determines your total. Before scheduling, ask for an estimate identifying the crown material, included visits and any separate treatment charges. If you are using insurance, ask about your estimated patient portion and confirm benefits with your insurer. For self-pay, ask the office about current payment options.

Benefits and limitations of dental crowns

A crown can restore function for chewing and improve a tooth’s appearance. It requires removal of some natural tooth structure; possible drawbacks include sensitivity, chipping or loosening. Ask how the benefits and risks apply to your tooth.

With proper care, crowns often last five to fifteen years, although individual results vary. Your bite, oral health and habits matter; a damaged crown may require replacement.

Dental care after your crown procedure

✓ Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth daily, and attend regular dental visits.

✓ Avoid chewing ice or using teeth as tools.

✓ Ask your dentist about protection if you grind your teeth.

✓ Contact the office if a crown loosens or becomes damaged.

Good oral hygiene and regular check-ups help protect the crowned tooth and surrounding teeth. A crown does not make the tooth underneath immune to decay. Ask your dentist how to clean around the crown’s edge.

Dental crown FAQs

Could a filling or veneer work instead?

Sometimes. A filling repairs a smaller area; a crown covers more of the tooth. Veneers cover the front surface and are an option in cosmetic dentistry, rather than a substitute for every damaged tooth. Severe decay may make a tooth unsuitable for a crown. Your dentist will assess what can be preserved.

Does every crown require a root canal?

No. Root canal treatment treats problems inside the tooth; a crown covers and supports the tooth. Your dentist will assess whether you need either treatment or both.

What does the $600 starting price include?

The $600 offer is a starting price, not the total for every patient. Ask which crown material qualifies, what visits and services are included, and whether preparation or other dental treatment is charged separately. Request your own estimate before making a decision.

Can I request an urgent appointment?

Yes—call about a broken or loose crown or new tooth pain. An assessment can help determine whether early treatment is needed. Tell the team when the problem started and check availability; immediate or same-day treatment is not guaranteed.
